Nuclear Waste Transfer Flask Manufacturing –  Precision Engineered by Starweld

At Starweld Engineering, we specialise in the design, fabrication, and welding of nuclear waste transfer flasks—manufactured to meet the most stringent safety, performance, and compliance standards in the nuclear sector. Based in Sheffield, we supply high-integrity, heavy-duty metal containment solutions for radioactive material handling, storage, and transport.

Certified Nuclear Fabrication Expertise

With over 75 years of experience in advanced metal fabrication and coded welding, our team is trusted by nuclear contractors and energy providers for the production of:

  • Nuclear waste transfer flasks and shielded containers

  • Radiation shielding vessels and lead-lined transport units

  • Custom-engineered containment flasks for low, intermediate, and high-level waste

  • Lifting beams, tie-downs, and handling fixtures

All flasks are fabricated in-house by qualified welders to BS EN ISO 9606, and manufactured under strict ISO 9001:2015 quality control with full traceability, weld inspection, and material certification.

Built for Safety, Strength & Compliance

Our nuclear waste transfer flasks are:

✅ Constructed from high-grade carbon steel, stainless steel, or duplex alloys
✅ Engineered for impact resistance, leak-tightness, and radiation shielding
✅ Manufactured to meet ONR, IAEA, and client-specific nuclear transport codes
✅ Compatible with dry shielded canisters, remote handling systems, and waste vaults

We offer complete design-for-manufacture (DFM) support using advanced CAD software, with options for integrated lead lining, venting systems, bolted closures, and transport lugs.

Why Choose Starweld for Nuclear Flask Manufacturing?

✅ Engineering-led fabrication with decades of nuclear experience
✅ In-house coded MIG, TIG & ARC welding on heavy-gauge materials
✅ Non-destructive testing (NDT), ultrasonic inspection & full QA documentation
✅ Design & fabrication to meet ASME, RCC-M, or IAEA regulations
✅ Based in Sheffield – serving UK nuclear contractors and Tier 1 suppliers

Nuclear Transfer Flask Case Study

A prestigious nuclear research facility had a requirement for two  stainless steel vessels, which would be filled with lead to provide radiation protection. The job involved the manufacture of stainless steel cylinders, along with associated lifting lugs, test ports and liners.

Whilst drawings were supplied by the client, Starweld used up to date CAD software, to model the finished item, which showed specific stresses that may be placed upon the structure during the build. When the client was notified of the modifications required they were subsequently approved.

Given the nature of the end use, the quality and integrity of the build was imperative. Starweld were able to work to all specified tolerances in the fabrication and all relevant weld codes. Full NDT testing was carried out following the build.

The success of the project has lead to Starweld securing a repeat order for the same items and also work of a similar nature.

Trusted Fabricators for Nuclear Projects

From decommissioning to active waste handling, we support Sellafield, EDF, Magnox, and MOD supply chains with safe, compliant metalwork solutions. Whether you need one-off prototype builds or batch production of waste flasks, Starweld delivers on precision, safety, and schedule.
