At Starweld Engineering, we repair cracked alloy wheels for drivers across Sheffield and South Yorkshire using precision TIG welding. We’re welding specialists — not a cosmetic refurbishment shop — so if your wheel has a crack, fracture or structural fault, that’s exactly the work we do. Part of an engineering group established in 1944, we bring over 80 years of metalwork experience to every repair.

Crack Repair — Not Cosmetic Refurbishment

It helps to be clear about what we do before you bring a wheel in.

We DO repair:

  • Hairline cracks in the wheel face, spoke or rim
  • Structural fractures from potholes, kerbs or impact damage
  • Cracks causing air leaks or vibration
  • Forged and cast aluminium alloy wheels
  • All wheel diameters from 14″ to 22″+

We DON’T do:

  • Cosmetic scuff or scratch repair
  • Diamond-cut refurbishment
  • Powder coating or repainting
  • Buckled or bent wheel straightening (cosmetic)
  • Kerb-rash refinishing

If you need cosmetic refurbishment, we’d recommend a specialist refurb company. If you have a crack, fracture or structural damage, that’s exactly what we’re here for. We give honest, no-obligation assessments — if we don’t think a wheel is safe to repair, we’ll say so.

What Type of Cracked Alloy Wheel Can We Repair?

Most structural cracks in aluminium alloy wheels can be welded, depending on their location and how far the damage has spread. Common repairable cracks include:

  • Inner barrel cracks — the most common location, caused by pothole impact. Usually hidden behind the tyre and only spotted when the wheel keeps losing pressure. Highly repairable in most cases.
  • Spoke cracks — visible on the wheel face, often from kerb strikes. Repairable if the crack hasn’t propagated into a stress-critical area.
  • Rim flange cracks — on the outer edge where the tyre seats. Repairable provided the rim hasn’t lost its geometry.
  • Hub-area cracks — closest to the mounting face. We assess these case by case; some are repairable, some are unsafe to weld.

Wheels showing heat damage from previous repair attempts can often be repaired too. Whatever the damage, we’ll give you a straight answer after inspection.

Why Repair a Cracked Alloy Wheel Rather Than Replace It?

A professional weld repair restores the strength of the wheel and is often far more economical than a replacement — especially for premium or discontinued alloys where a new wheel may be hard to source. Repairing your wheel can:

  • Save money compared with buying a new wheel
  • Extend the working life of your alloys
  • Maintain vehicle safety and performance
  • Restore structural integrity with precision welding

Our Alloy Wheel Crack Repair Process

Every cracked wheel repair at Starweld follows a proven method to ensure quality and safety:

  1. Inspection & assessment — we check the wheel to identify cracks, stress points and weaknesses.
  2. Preparation — the damaged area is cleaned and prepared for welding.
  3. TIG welding repair — using controlled TIG welding, we restore the alloy’s strength.
  4. Refinishing — the weld is dressed back for a clean, structurally sound finish.

Cracked Alloy Wheel Repair – Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to repair a cracked alloy wheel?

Most single-crack repairs cost a fraction of a replacement wheel, particularly for premium or discontinued alloys where a new wheel may not even be available. We give every customer a free, no-obligation quote after inspection.

How long does the repair take?

Most single-crack repairs are completed the same day — and often within an hour if you book ahead. Multiple wheels or complex damage may take longer, and we'll always give you a clear timeframe before starting.

Do you collect and deliver wheels?

Our service is workshop-based in Sheffield, so customers usually drop wheels off and collect the same day. For larger fleets or trade customers, we can arrange collection across South Yorkshire.

Will the repair be visible?

On the inner barrel — the most common crack location — no, the repair is hidden behind the tyre. On visible parts of the wheel face, the weld is dressed smooth but will show as a clean repair line unless the wheel is later refinished by a refurbishment specialist.

Do you repair motorbike, trailer or commercial vehicle wheels?

Yes — we work on alloy wheels from any vehicle, including motorbikes, trailers, classics and light commercials.
